Things You Should Know Before Visiting Ghana
Ghana is a popular travel destination in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly for those in the diaspora returning home for the holidays and travelers drawn to its rich culture and exciting events. Booking flights early is key! For travel around Christmas and New Year's, aim to book 4-5 months in advance, or at least 3 months for off-peak times. Use Google Flights price alerts to monitor changes. United Airlines offers direct flights to Accra from various U.S. cities (check here for flights).
Ghana's main international gateway is Kotoka International Airport in Accra. Kumasi, home to the Ashanti kingdom, has a new international airport worth exploring later in your trip. It’s recommended to start in Accra to ease into the culture and then explore other regions like Cape Coast and Kumasi for a deeper dive into history and culture.
When you arrive, expect immigration officers to be friendly but firm. While tips or gifts might be requested, you’re not obligated to give anything—tip at your discretion. Exchange or withdraw Ghana Cedis (GH₵) at the airport; $100–$300 should suffice initially.
Ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt are reliable options for transportation, though taxis are readily available (and pricier). If you're traveling with Silk Sojourn, transportation will be arranged for you. In most places you will visit, you can (and it is recommended) negotiate prices.
For accommodations, neighborhoods like Osu, Airport Residential, and Cantonments offer the best mix of accessibility, safety, and amenities. Embassy Gardens in Cantonments is a favorite among travelers for its convenience and quality apartments.
